About

Philip Lamperski is a musician, artist and sound engineer specializing in real time interactive music composition and performance using signal processing and machine learning algorithms. The music software applications he programs involve algorithmic composition, live human-computer interaction with western instruments and generative music for video games. Additionally, he was the project leader on building UC Santa Cruz's audio-visual tabletop surface instrument, "protoTable".

His goal is not to replace the role of musicianship with machines, but to enhance, motivate and reward the performer through creating a new way of playing and making music. His research, software and music compositions have been premiered internationally and throughout the United States. Recently, Philip's music and research have been featured at the Pacific Rim Music Festival (Seoul Korea & Santa Cruz, CA 2010) as well as at the grand opening of the Digital Arts Research Center at UC Santa Cruz, 2010.

Philip holds a B.S. in Psychology, and a B.A. in Music from the University of Pittsburgh as well as an MA in Music from UC Santa Cruz. While pursuing his MA he worked as a Teaching Assistant, Recording Engineer and Technical Assistant for UC Santa Cruz. During this time he taught sections on music technology, assisted in the installation of UCSC’s Digital Arts and New Media 2010 MFA Exhibition and was a recording engineer for the Pacific Rim Music Festival and 2009 UCSC/ISIM Festival/Conference among other concerts.

Currently, Philip works at Crystal Dynamics as an Audio Designer.
